Footnote
The sitter in the present work was the second son of King Louis-Philippe I of France and Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily.  He married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, first cousin of Queen Victoria, in 1842.  In the revolution of 1848 he assisted with the King's retreat and only escaped by disguising himself as a national guardsman.  He was exiled to England where he lived at Claremont and Bushy House before returning to Paris in 1871.  He died at Versailles on 26th June 1896 where the original oil by Franz Xaver Winterhalter is held.  The present miniature was in the Czartoryski Paris home, the Hotel Lambert on the Ile Saint Louis, until 1976.  The property was then bought by Guy de Rothschild at which point it came into the possession of the present owner.
