Another version of this portrait by John Smart was painted in
1773.
An apparent copy of the present portrait in oil on copper was sold
Sotheby’s, London, 23 September 2021, lot 224 (from the collection of the late
Timothy Clowes).
The sitter was a Royal Navy officer and served during The Seven
Years’ War. He was awarded the Order of the Bath in 1761 and he was buried at
Westminster Abbey.

some restoration by Limner Antiques.
