Estimate: | £800 - £1,200 |
This bronze is cast after a Roman marble version dating to the 1st / 2nd Century AD, which in turn is after a Greek Hellenistic original. The Roman marble version is now in the Louvre Paris, having also been mentioned in the Borghese collection in 1638.
This example was cast by the foundry Maison de Marnyhac & Cie, which was established circa 1865 and a direct competitor to the famous Barbedienne foundry. The first shop was at Rue de la Paix and after success at the London International Exhibition in 1871, they opened a showroom for a period in Regent St. London.
