With scrolling acanthus arms terminating in bunches of grapes and tiered baluster stems supported by mermen on triform bases with Bacchus mask feet, 38cm high
Estimate: | £200 - £400 |
Hammer price: | £150 |
Provenance:
By repute a gift from Napoleon III to Robert Jope Slade (1828-1896), the Harbour Master of Torquay when Napoleon III visited in 1871. He was also committee secretary to the prestigious Torbay Royal Regatta, which later move to Cowes to become the Royal Yacht Club. Accordingly, these candelabra were passed down through the vendor’s family as ‘heirlooms’ reputedly gifted by the ex Emperor.
