London: "Printed for Vernor and Hood, 31, Poultry; Constable and Hunter, Edinburgh; and Brash and Reid, Glasgow; by James Swan, Angel-Street," 1804. 4to (285 x 220mm). 16 hand-coloured engraved plates including the "frontispiece" bound after the title in this copy, errata leaf (some mainly light staining throughout). Modern dark burgundy morocco, the spine lettered in gilt, modern marbled endpapers. Provenance: From the Collection of Wilfrid Ward; old annotation to the verso of the first plate [i.e. originally intended as the frontispiece]; old textual correction in pencil to p.311. FIRST EDITION. "In 1786 [Thornton] undertook a sporting tour in the Scottish highlands. He chartered the sloop Falcon, and partly by sea and partly by land proceeded through a great part of the northern and western highlands, dividing his time between hunting, shooting, angling, and hawking. In 1804 he published, 'A Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England and the Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland'" (DNB).
