Original burgundy buckram, 2 maps of Crete printed in blue on the front pastedown, the spine lettered in gilt (the gilt faded in parts, rectangular stains to the front and rear free endpapers), dust-jacket designed by John Craxton with price of 15s. unclipped, double photographed portrait of the author on lower wrapper (dust-jacket torn at head of backstrip and corners with some loss). FIRST EDITION of this account of the author's experiences, alongside Patrick Leigh Fermor, as a "Special Operations Executive" behind enemy lines in Crete in World War II. RARE.
