MOUNTBATTEN, Louis, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-79).  A one-page typed letter, with the greeting and signature in autograph, on paper headed "Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean, c/o G.P.O. London," dated 18th September, 1954, to Vice-Consul William Harry Alfred Snook, stating, "My dear Vice-Consul, I am writing to thank you very much not only for the arrangements you made for my own visit to Corsica, but for all the other ships of the Mediterranean fleet who visited the various harbours of Corsica during the present cruise ... It will be very nice if you could obtain for the Society of Nautical Research one photostat copy of each of the four letters which passed between Admirals Hood and Nelson. You can assure the owners that in no circumstances will anybody ask him to give up the originals. Yours sincerely, Mountbatten of Burma." With another one-page typed letter from Mountbatten to the same recipient, dated 1st January, 1959, congratulating him on being awarded an M.B.E. in the New Years Honours List; with 3 further typed letters to Vice-Consul Snook, each one-page, from Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Michael Connolly Abel Smith (on paper headed "H. M. Yacht Britannia"), dated 1956; Vice-Admiral L. F. Durnford-Slater (1957); and Air Marshal C. E. Chilton (1958) respectively, all relating to the same visit to Corsica. (5)
