Santa Barbara: Graham Mackintosh, 1987. 4to (260 x 210mm). 24 monochrome photographed illustrations by Michael Montfort (some very light staining to the first and last photograph). Original grey cloth-backed printed boards with a photographed portrait of Bukowski on the front cover, acetate wrapper (some very faint spotting and staining to the covers). Provenance: from the Collection of David Kotthoff. FIRST EDITION. LIMITED TO 496 COPIES, THIS COPY "P" OF 26 "HARDBOUND IN BOARDS BY EARL [sic] GREY", SIGNED BY CHARLES BUKOWSKI AND WITH AN ORIGINAL SELF-PORTRAIT SKETCH BENEATH HIS SIGNATURE. The binder's name is usually spelt Earle Grey. The colophon states, "Printed September 1987 in Santa Barbara for Michael Montfort by Graham Mackintosh for a show of photographs at 'Grauwert Gallery' in Hamburg, Germany." In addition to Bukowski's signature on the colophon leaf, the title page has also been signed by Michael Montfort. Loosely-inserted is a coloured Polaroid (or Polaroid-style) self-portrait of Montford as a young man in Hollywood, with his name, dates of birth and death and the address of the Green Hills [Memorial] Park, Palos Verdes, California, on the reverse: copies of these were presumably distributed at his funeral or memorial service.
