Half title, publisher's ornament on verso of half title, wood-engraved frontispiece by Hugh Thomson, peacock motif on title, illustrations by Hugh Thomson, initials (some spotting and staining to first few leaves including title and tissue guard, some light mainly marginal spotting and staining, a few darker spots). FINELY BOUND in original highly elaborate pictorial cloth gilt after a design by Hugh Thomson, the upper cover with a peacock's tail stamped in gilt and with peacock feathers in gilt to the spine, gilt edges, black endpapers (corners a little bumped). Provenance: "To dear Mabel from Frankie, Xmas 1894" (signature on half title). A FINE EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST EDITION IN THE "PEACOCK BINDING", and the first edition of Jane Austen's novel to be fully illustrated. Gilson E78; Spielmann Hugh Thomson 12.
