FINELY BOUND BY SALLY LOU SMITH [signed "S.L.S."] in contemporary morocco, the covers with rectangular apertures revealing representations of archaeological and geological layers and mineral fragments including gold and tin, the spine lettered in gilt, contained in a padded morocco-backed book box. Provenance: leather bookplates laid down at the end with crowned monogram [?]"H. B." and motto "Pax et Spes", possibly those of Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, 2nd Baron Wardington (1924-2005). Sally Lou Smith (1925-2007) was a distinguished bookbinder, teacher and a Fellow and President of Designer Bookbinders, the pre-eminent British bookbinding society.
