Half title, folding lithographed map printed in red and blue, 17-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end including a full-page advertisement for "Treasure Island" (spotting and staining throughout, map torn without loss, one advertisement leaf detached). Original red cloth gilt (very worn and stained, inner hinges broken, spine faded). Provenance: Sir William Eden, Bart. (armorial bookplate of Anthony Eden's father, rarely seen in this collection); W. H. Smith & Son, London (blindstamp to front free endpaper); Anthony Eden, with his inscription in pencil to the half title, stating: "From the soldier's library when Windles [i.e. Windlestone Hall] was a hospital in first world war. A first edition? A[nthony]." The front pastedown is further inscribed in a different hand, in ink, "Windlestone Hall, October 8/9/18" and the half title "Windlestone Hall, Ferry Hill, Cty. Durham". FIRST EDITION, with the following issue points: 'business' on p.40; 'nine o'clock' on p.64; 'Long Islands' on p.101; the second page of the advertisements with code '5G.4.86' and the tenth with code '5B.4.86'.
