Half title, folding engraved plate at the end [relating to another article] (occasional mainly light spotting and staining). Contemporary calf backed textured cloth boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers (lightly rubbed). Provenance: From the Collection of Peter and Margarethe Braune. A heavily-abridged 4-page version of this paper appeared in the Comptes Rendus de l' Academie de Sciences (Paris, 1857). FIRST (COMPLETE) EDITION of the "first demonstration of the connection between a specific fermentation and the activity of a specific living micro-organism. This paper is often considered the beginning of bacteriology as a modern science" (Garrison-Morton).
