NORTHUMBERLAND - Christopher SAXTON (c.1540-c.1610) & [John SPEED (c.1551-1629)]. Northumberland Truely Drawne & Described. Anno: 1642. Christophorus Saxton descripsit. [London: William Web], 1642 [but 1645]. Engraved map, title within a highly elaborate strapwork cartouche surmounted by the coat-of-arms of Charles I, with Thomas Seckford's coat-of-arms beneath and his motto "Industria naturam ornat." in a banner above, small inset bird's-eye-view of "Barwick" [i.e. Berwick-upon-Tweed], blank on verso, fleur-de-lys watermark (a few marginal tears without loss), 380 x 460mm., unframed. The map is from William Web's rare edition of Saxton's atlas; many of the maps, as here, include Charles I's arms, a contentious act at the time of publication during the Civil War which would have made Web's allegiances clear. This map of Northumberland has Saxton's cartouche and a slightly reduced version of Speed's bird's-eye-view of Berwick-upon-Tweed in the top left-hand corner, making this one of only two maps in the Web edition of the atlas to include a town view. Chubb VII (atlas); Skelton County Atlases of the British Isles 1579-1703 27, map 29 [under Saxton/Web]: "An inset plan of 'Barwick' (after Speed) added in the top left-hand corner"; the atlas not in Wing. RARE.
