BURNETT, Frances Hodgson (1849-1924).  The Secret Garden. London: William Heinemann, 1911. Square 8vo (202 x 150mm). Half title, title printed in red and black with foliate border and small illustration, 8 coloured plates by Charles Robinson, 6-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end (some extremely faint marginal staining to a few leaves). Original green pictorial buckram gilt, top edges stained green, pictorial endpapers (corners very lightly rubbed). Provenance: "With love from Joyce" (over-sized juvenile inscription on half title). THE FIRST U.K. EDITION of this much-loved children's classic, published one month after the first American edition, and the first to include Charles Robinson's illustrations. Carpenter & Prichard The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature 89; Lewis The Twentieth Century Book p.176: "I doubt if the American author Frances Hodgson Burnett has many readers for her Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886), though her charming The Secret Garden is still read widely."
