Half titles, 14 engraved plates, wood-engraved illustrations, tables, 16-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end of vol. one (some mainly marginal staining to plates, occasional light spotting and staining). Original pictorial roan-backed cloth boards gilt, yellow endpapers, uncut (head of spines worn and frayed with loss of letters, rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: illegible signature dated 1856 on front free endpaper of vol. II. Second edition, eighth thousand. First published in 1842, the work remained the standard authoritative reference book on the subject throughout the 19th-century and into the 20th. (2)
