BROWN, Robert Hewitt (1830-83).  Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy; or, The Origin and Meaning of Ancient and Modern Mysteries Explained ... With Numerous Illustrations by the Author. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1882. Large square 8vo (234 x 190mm). 2 mounted coloured plates with volvelles, illustrations (the second coloured plate lacking the upper volvelle, the remaining volvelle secured with a pin, some very light mainly marginal staining). Original tan decorated cloth gilt, floral endpapers (rubbed and scuffed, joints split, inner hinges weak, some staining). Provenance: Samuel Weiser, Inc., New York (small bookseller's label on front pastedown); some pencil annotation, embellishment and underlining. FIRST EDITION. RARE. "The book is well printed and copiously illustrated ... The author describes the ancient Mysteries, which he claims were originally astronomical in character, and suggests that there is some relation between those Mysteries and modern Freemasonry, whose symbolism is also to a large extent astronomical. Under the head of Masonic Astronomy the origin of the word Masonry is traced to light, or to the sun, which is the great source of light. Various parts of the ceremony in the performing of the work of a Lodge are noticed, and a very remarkable showing is made as to the relation thus signified with the movements and positions of the heavenly bodies ..."
