Half title, printer's device on verso of half title, wood-engraved frontispiece and illustrations by Hugh Thomson, initials (some light spotting to frontispiece and title). Original elaborate pictorial dark blue cloth gilt after a design by Hugh Thomson, the upper cover with a peacock's tail design in gilt and with peacock design in gilt to spine, gilt edges (short split to head of spine, some faint white staining to lower cover). Provenance: loosely-inserted is a 2-page autograph letter from N. Theo-Johnstone to C. R. Tritton, dated 1940, discussing this edition and 'Pride and Prejudice' in general, and a further letter from Theo-Johnstone's secretary to Tritton on the same subject; from the Collection of the late Professor Bernard Nevill (1930-2019).
