Contemporary red morocco-backed marbled paper boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Sir Campbell Clarke (armorial bookplate); from the Collection of the late Leslie Waddington (1934-2015) and thence by descent. PRESENTATION COPY, the half title inscribed "à M. Campbell Clarke son [?]trés dévoué et bien cordial Emile Zola." First published in 1868, the novel bears a printed dedication to Edouard Manet. The recipient of this presentation copy, Sir Campbell Clarke (1845-1902), was a librarian at the British Museum and an international correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. When Zola visited England in 1893 Clarke acted as his mentor and the two men became close friends.
