The author was a French engineer, physiologist and ‘chronophotographer’ who devised a number of pioneering photographic and graphical techniques for the interpretation of physiological movements and other data. Like Edweard Muybridge (1830-1904), his exact contemporary in England, he is also celebrated as a precursor of cinematography.
