This model is inspired after an example by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (French, 1763–1810), who, in 1799, carved the archetypal Napoleon Bonaparte portrait bust in marble. The Sevres porcelain factory then disseminated the image widely throughout the Empire, reproduced in a biscuit porcelain. There is a version with a laurel crown in the Louvre Museum, but Bonaparte is modelled wearing robes, unlike the example offered here.
