Known collectively as the 'Yorkshire Critters', Dutton was one of roughly 40 craftsmen working in the mid-20th century following the style of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson of Kilburn. Some craftsmen had trained under Thompson and each continued his tradition by adopting their own 'critter' moniker. Other well known makers include Robert 'Wrenman' Hunter, Wilfred 'Squirrelman' Hutchinson and Colin 'Beaverman' Almack.
Martin Dutton’s emblem the ‘Lizard’, was continued by his associate Yorkshire craftsman, Derek Slater.
