Provenance

By repute the 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929).

Sold Christie’s, London 2000, The Property of a Lady, lot 136.

Acquired by the previous owner from a London dealer in the 1950s, who suggested this table came from the collection of the Earls of Rosebery, which was originally dispersed in 1939.

Condition report:

Mahogany drawer linings.

Shrinkage to the top with split forming across the central section  (see extra image).

Fading and the inevitable scuffs, scrathes, dents, small chips and marks commensurate with wear, use and age.

Some lifting to areas of the inlaid stringing in places.

Some old worm to the carcass, noticeable along the bottom edge of one side below the frieze drawers.

Tidied up at some point; some light re-gluing in the odd area, noticeable along the frieze edge where some of the inlay is recessed to the side of the frieze drawer. See images.
