LOVECRAFT, H. P. (1890-1937) - August DERLETH (1909-71).  H. P. L.: a memoir. New York: Ben Abramson, 1945. 8vo (203 x 140mm). Half title, mounted portrait frontispiece of H. P. Lovecraft printed in red. Original red cloth, the spine lettered in gilt (some fading to the gilt lettering, without a dust-jacket). Provenance: Messrs. Berkelouw (small bookseller's label on the front pastedown). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For Gordon Dewey - a memory of H. P. L. Cordially, August Derleth." Little is known of the recipient of this copy, George Gordon Dewey (1906-75), apart from the fact that he was a writer of science fiction stories and was a member of the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society. The memoir concludes with what must be the first bibliography of H. P. Lovecraft (pp.113-118).
