DERLETH, August (1909-71).  Someone in the Dark. [Sauk City, Wisconsin:] Arkham House, 1941. 8vo (172 x 115mm). Half title (short tear at the gutter opposite the half title, light stain at the gutters of the last two leaves). Original black cloth, the spine lettered in gilt, the dust-jacket [whose artwork is not attributed but is by Frank Utpatel] with the price of $2.00 unclipped. Provenance: pencil ticks to three stories in contents leaf. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of this collection of fourteen stories and two "novelettes", and the second book to be printed at Arkham House. A printed note at the end states: "This book Someone in the Dark was composed, printed and bound by The Collegiate Press, George Banta Publishing Company, Menasha, Wisconsin. It is composed in Linotype Old Style No. 1 and printed on Cream Winnebago Eggshell. The cloth is Holliston Novelex." Beneath this note, someone has added in pencil: "1012 copies printed." Please note that the original dust-jacket has been photographed in its modern protective archival Mylar wrapper, thereby avoiding any risk of damage through its temporary removal.
