Original russet panelled cloth, the spine lettered and ruled in gilt, black endpapers (extremities rubbed, covers lightly scuffed, abrasion mark on spine affecting one letter). Provenance: "With the Compliments of the Dowager Countess of Crawford" (compliment slip tipped onto the front free endpaper); Lockinge (tan morocco armorial bookplate lettered and decorated in gilt with the motto: "Astra castra numen lumen"). The work, published 11 years after the author's death, contains a Preface by his wife, Margaret Crawford, which states, "... I cannot but feel that there is much that will provoke adverse criticism, and that, to some, even the principle on which it is founded may seem unjustified. But in times like these, when all things that can be brought to bear on the great questions of our Faith are so eagerly sought after, I have felt that the result of a long life of deep and conscientious research should not be lost to the world ..."
