Dramatic Characters, or Different Portraits of the English Stage. London: "Printed for Robt. Sayer ... and Jn. Smith," 1770 [but most plates dated 1769]. 4to (195 x 190mm; size of plates 95 x 80mm). 2 engraved titles in English and French, the list of the plates with the actors' names and their parts, printed dedication by John Smith to David Garrick, and 30 hand-coloured engraved plates, all the text leaves and plates neatly trimmed and laid down within old wide wash grey borders (some very light spotting and staining, a few darker spots). Contemporary calf, the covers with a narrow Greek key-pattern border gilt, marbled endpapers (the spine with old repairs, the corners and edges quite heavily rubbed, the hinges broken but the text block holding, lacking spine label but old fragment remaining). The contents list in the present copy calls for only 24 plates; the additional plates included here comprise, 25) "Mr Holland in the Character of Jachimo in Cymbeline", dated 1771; 26) "Mr Barry in the Character of Hotspur", undated; 27) "Mr Garrick in the Character of Lord Chalkstone in Lethe", undated; 28) "Mr Garrick in the Character of Lusignan in Zarah", dated 1770; 29) "Mr Powell in the Character of Posthumus in Cumbeline", undated; and 30) "Mrs Bellamy in the Character of Clarinda in The Suspicious Husband", undated.
