Half title, publisher's advertisement on the verso of half title, title printed in red and black, 14-pages of [undated] publisher's advertisements at the end (some very light mainly marginal browning and staining). Original green cloth, the spine lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (short tear to head of spine, spine a little darkened, corners rubbed, inner hinges a little weak). Provenance: The Property of a Collector; "On appro. Walmsley" (later bookseller's pencil note on the front pastedown). FIRST EDITION of this collection of five short stories, FIRST ISSUE, with dropped "3" in the page number on p.36 and the top edges gilt. The stories, four of which were previously published in serial form, are: "Karain" (previously published in Blackwood's Magazine in November 1897); "The Idiots" (The Savoy, October 1896), "An Outpost of Progress" (Cosmopolis, June and July 1897), "The Return" (here first published) and "The Lagoon" (The Cornhill Magazine, January 1897).
