Half title, publisher's advertisements on the verso, 32-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end, partly unopened (occasional mainly marginal spotting and staining). Original yellow pictorial cloth stamped and lettered in black (some light staining, spine darkened, corners bumped). Provenance: The Property of a Collector; "W. H. Smith & Son's Subscription Library" (label on front pastedown, stamped "Sold"); small circular [?]library stamp on front free endpaper. FIRST U.K. EDITION, of the author's only work of science fiction, albeit co-written, FIRST ISSUE without the dedication leaf and with publisher's advertisements. Bleiler The Checklist of Fantastic Literature p.82; Cagle A 6a; Keating 32; Wise 9: "Regarding The Inheritors, Mr. Conrad has remarked:- 'My share in this work is very small so far as actual writing goes. But it had been the cause of long and heated discussions, lasting well into many nights.'" With the same authors' Romance. A Novel (London, 1903, 8vo, some heavy spotting, lacks endpapers before half title, original blue cloth, the upper cover lettered and framed in white, the spine gilt. FIRST EDITION. Wise 14: "Regarding Romance Mr. Conrad has written :- 'In this book I have done my share of writing. Most of the characters (with the exception of Mrs. Williams, Sebright and the seamen) were introduced by Hueffer and developed then in my own way with, of course, his consent and collaboration. The last part is, like the first, the work of Hueffer, except a few portions written by me. Part Second is actually joint work.
