Full-page monochrome illustrations after Albrecht Dürer. FINELY BOUND BY DON ETHERINGTON in full cream pigskin, the covers with a striking jagged "crown of thorns" design [?based on a detail after Durer] in black morocco onlays, dissected by gilt ruled lines, the spine lettered in gilt with the artist's monogram at the foot in black morocco onlays, gilt edges, silk endpapers, black cloth book box (light stain to upper edge of upper cover). Provenance: Loosely-inserted is an autograph note, on paper headed "Don Etherington, Bookbinder", dated, "1.6.68", stating, "Dear Sir, Please find enclosed 3 books [sic] for Guild [?of Contemporary Bookbinders] Exhibition, Yours faithfully, Don Etherington." [Please note that only one book is included in the lot.] Don Etherington (b.1935) began bookbinding at the age of thirteen before going on to study at the London School of Printing. He has held positions at the Bibliotheca Nazionale in Florence, the Library of Congress and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, Austin and has received awards from the American Institute for Conservation and the Guild of Book Workers.
