Original black cloth decorated in silver and red, dust-jacket with price of "8s. 6d." unclipped (some fraying to the corners of jacket). FIRST EDITION, second impression [printed in the same month and year as the first], PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed, "For Nina, with love from James. And the man said: 'I am worried. The roof is still leaking.' Ha Ha. Nov '19th. '65." With c. 70 other books, the majority by James Hanley, many FIRST EDITIONS and SIGNED PRESENTATION COPIES, some with autograph letters from the author to Nina Froud loosely- inserted, and including Hanley's The German Prisoner (London, [1930], frontispiece by William Roberts, original buckram, NUMBER 434 OF 500 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR) and Stoker Haslett (London, 1932, original buckram, NUMBER 222 OF 350 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed "Much love from James to Nina", with a one-page autograph letter, signed, from the author to Nina Froud loosely-inserted (a number of front free endpapers have been removed from a few of the novels); together with a quantity of general archival material, typed letters, cards, photographs, etc., most by, or relating to, James Hanley and to his close friend and literary agent at Harvey Unna Stephen Durbage Ltd., Nina Froud (the "Nina" of the many presentation copies and letters); and including a copy of, and a folder containing correspondence relating to, Maxim Gorky's Chaliapin, which James Hanley co-edited with Nina Froud. Provenance: The Property of the late Tamara Lo.
