SCOTT FITZGERALD, F. (1896-1940).  The Vegetable or from President to postman. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. 8vo (190 x 130mm). Half title, 2-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end. Original green cloth, title blindstamped on upper cover (head of spine torn with slight loss, some fraying to lower edge of spine, corners bumped and rubbed, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: ex-library copy, with remnants of labels, and "DISCARD" stamped on title and front pastedown, and shelf mark in white ink at foot of spine. FIRST EDITION of the author's only dramatic work, based on his own short story of the same name. Although Fitzgerald considered it amongst the best things he had ever written, the first night, on 19 November 1923, was widely judged to be a disaster, with many of the audience walking out during the second act.
