Half title, chromolithographed frontispiece and 19 illustrations after the originals by John Tenniel, 3-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end (some light mainly marginal staining to frontispiece and title). Original cloth-backed coloured pictorial boards designed by E. Gertrude Thomson (some staining, corners rubbed). Provenance: "To Edmund Hugh Moore on his birthday 1890, the gift of his Godfather, W. H. B." (inscription on front free endpaper); "Geoffrey Edmund and Desmond Hugh, with love from Godfather, Xmas 1927, [illegible signature]" (inscription on front free endpaper). Second [but first published] edition, with price of "Four Shillings" on the title and without Alice's profile in the illustration on page 34. Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 216: "10,000 sets of sheets [of the first edition of 1889] were printed by Edmund Evans but Dodgson rejected the entire edition in sheets as the pictures were 'far too bright and gaudy'; he instructed that they should be reprinted (letter to Macmillan, 23 June 1889)." These reprinted sheets comprise the present edition, with issue points as noted.
