COBURN, Alvin Langdon (1882-1966, photographer).  Men of Mark. London and New York: Duckworth ... [verso of title:] Printed at the Ballantyne Press, London, 1913. 4to (310 x 235mm). Half title, woodcut ornament on title, 33 tipped-in photogravure plates by Alvin Langdon Coburn (half title and title quite heavily spotted, some spotting throughout, although not conspicuously affecting the plates). Original buckram lettered in gilt (some staining, corners rubbed). FIRST EDITION. "I feel I have done a very worthy work in handing down to future generations in the permanent process of photogravure the portraits of a group of eminent men of my own time. I have not attempted to do anything startling or eccentric in the way of portrayals, but I have studied my men and their works with enthusiasm, and in each instance I have tried to catch and record the elusive something that differentiates a man of talent from his fellows and makes life worth while, worth struggling with towards ever greater understanding" (from the photographer's preface).
