Half title, title within green decorative border with central ornament, fine hand- or pochoir-coloured illustrations by Léon Carré, one full-page, chapter-heading ornaments printed in green and black. Original printed wrappers with a coloured illustration on the upper wrapper, uncut (without the slipcase). ONE OF 1,100 COPIES, this copy unnumbered [the number possibly rubbed-out]. The book is printed on exceptionally fine silk paper. PRESENTATION COPY, the half title inscribed by the author, "a Monsieur Frank Jay Gould, cette histoire vielle de plus de vingt ans, ce qui l' amitié seule est [illegible word] de rendre un peu de jeunesse, hommage de [illegible word] et affectueuse gratitude, Pierre Benoit, [?]Mars 1940." Frank Jay Gould (1877-1956) was a philanthropist, art collector, developer and owner of many hotels on the French Riviera.
