BINDING - Jean de la FONTAINE (1621-95).  Contes et Nouvelles en Vers. Lyon: N. Scheuring, 1874-75. 2 volumes, large 8vo (236 x 150mm). Half titles, titles printed in red and black, engraved portrait, 2 engraved frontispieces, engraved illustrations, some full-page or near full-page, culs-de-lampe. EXCEPTIONALLY FINELY BOUND in contemporary crushed scarlet morocco by Antoine Chatelin, the covers with wide foliate borders gilt, spines gilt in compartments, dentelles, top edges gilt, others uncut (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: George Wyndham (armorial bookplate). NUMBER 22 OF AN UNSTATED LIMITATION. A loosely-inserted [unidentified] catalogue description states that this is one of 400 copies on vergé teinté.
