[VOLTAIRE, François-Marie Arouet (1694-1778)]. La Pucelle d'Orléans, Poëme en Vingt-Un Chants, avec des Notes, Auquel on a joint plusieurs Pièces qui y ont rapport. "A Londres" [but probably Paris or Geneva: no publisher, but probably Cazin], 1780. 2 parts bound in one, 12mo (120 x 70mm). Half title, engraved frontispiece, 21 engraved illustrations by Nicolas-André Monsiau and Clément Pierre Marillier, ornaments (some light spotting and staining). FINELY BOUND in later crushed scarlet morocco gilt by Chambolle-Duru, covers with gilt cornerpieces, spine gilt in compartments with tan morocco lettering-pieces, dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. The Parisian binding firm of Chambolle-Duru was founded by René Victor Chambolle (1834-98) and Hoppolyte Duru (d. 1884). Although Duru left the partnership in 1863, Chambolle continued to produce bindings under the name "Chambolle-Duru", and the name was retained after his son René (1873-1915) took over the firm in 1898. See lot 570 for another example of one of their bindings. cf.
