Established in 1837, the Art Union London was an art subscription service or lottery, through which the aspiring middle classes of the mid 19th Century could acquire art collections. An annual fee enabled the participants to win art through a lottery system: sculpture, paintings and works of art, some of which were commissioned by the Art Union.
E. W. Wyon’s frieze of figures within the shallow bowl were based upon designs of a vase from Sir William Hamilton’s collection in the British Museum.
