Noble was a leading British portrait sculptor who exhibited prolifically at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1876. He gained success in 1856 when he won the commission to create the Duke of Wellington monument in Manchester, beating off stiff  experienced competition. This led to further commissions, including the Albert Memorial Manchester and various busts of Queen Victoria.
