A RARE STAFFORDSHIRE TALL BLUE STONEWARE THREE-HANDLED POT POURRI VASE, LINER AND PIERCED COVER

Circa 1850
Modelled by Elijah Taylor ( 1816- 1867), the ovoid body moulded with acanthus beneath swags of acorns and oak leaves suspended from three satyr masks, the pierced cover moulded with further acorns and oak leaves, raised on three dolphin supports above a band of laurel leaves and incised around the base `E.Taylor', 59cm high; also a Staffordshire blue stoneware jug moulded with hop border attributed to Edward Walley of Cobridge, 24cm high (4)

Provenance : Brian John Spencer Ward, great great nephew of Elijah Taylor and thence by descent through the family. In the 1851 census Elijah Taylor is recorded as a modeller in clay from Stoke on Trent. Accompanying the lot is a copy of Elijah Taylor's certificate of marriage to Eliza Brookes in June, 1849 at Stoke on Trent where his profession is described as `Modeller'.

CONDITION REPORT

Vase, cover and liner- One handle has been broken off and and restored where it joins the body at the upper and lower terminals. Otherwise in overall good condition.
