It has been suggested that it is possibly foil backed fire opal and that there are two patches of host rock on opposing sides at the edge, otherwise minor surface wear, rather heavily cleaned in the past with some loss of definition to the martele decoration, the plain bar fitting which would have attached at the back is lacking, the scroll pierced side motifs would have once hinged to allow for movement, they are now soldered up and are rigid
