John Forbes (1801–1840) was a prominent British figure, serving as a director of the East India Company and holding a position in the British Parliament. Born in India, he was the eldest son of Sir Charles Forbes, 1st Baronet, and Elizabeth Cotgrave. Educated in the United Kingdom from 1809, Forbes matriculated at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1819. His familial ties to "Bombay Jock" (John Forbes, 1743–1821) facilitated his involvement with Forbes & Co., a trading company in Bombay. In 1821, Forbes gained a vote in the East India Company through a 20% investment from his father. The Lonach Gathering traditions began in 1822 to celebrate his 21st birthday, leaving a legacy beyond his death in 1840.
